Checking the claims 1: Gujarat is most developed, highly industrialized and richest state in India
| Share of three economic sectors in total income of Gujarat over time |
From economics perspective extent
of industrialization is measured from share of income from industry sector. As
can be seen from the graph, this share hasn’t changed since last 30 years; it
was around 30% in 1993-94, 28.7% in 2001, and is 28% in 2011!! Indian average of
industrial share in total income is also almost similar at 25%.
Developed economy is one which
has reduced reliance on primary sector i.e. agriculture and allied activities
that is dependent of natural resources. Share of primary sector in Gujarat has
been fluctuating in last decade with an average of around 17%; last three years
has seen an average of 13%. As a comparison, Kerala and Maharashtra has 9% its
income coming from primary sector, Tamil Nadu stands at 8%.
| Comparison of per capita income (Constant price) of selected best performing states over time |
Even for per capita income i.e.
average income citizens of any state would have on an average, Gujarat although
remained in top five over last few decades; it could never achieved top two
slots ever – neither in pre-reform period before 1992 or after that. Not even
in the last decade!
